Hands down, there's no better candle than a wooden wick candle -- the crackle of the wick adds another dimension of charm that other candles can't compare to. That being said, wooden wick candles can be higher maintenance than your typical cotton wick candles. In this article, we list the steps necessary to ensure you get the absolute best performance, crackle, and longevity from your Country Crackle Candle wooden wick candle.
Your candle's first burn is, by far, its most important. When you light your candle for the first time, be sure to leave enough time for the wax to melt completely across the entire surface (which may take up to a couple hours). By doing so, you prevent the wax from 'tunneling,' which can cause your candle to not stay lit.
(Wax is melted evenly across entire surface from edge to edge.)
Keeping your candle's wick trimmed is essential. A wick that is left too long is prone to uneven burning, difficult lighting, a large flame, fast burning, and sooting. It's best to keep your wick maintained to a length between 1/8" - 1/4" for best results. A wick trimmer is highly recommended for keeping your wick trimmed to the proper length. You will get the most longevity from your candle if you trim your wick every time before you re-light.
(A wick trimmer is best for keeping your wick at the correct length.)
(Example of a properly trimmed wick.)
It's not recommended to burn your candle longer than 3 - 4 hours at a time.
It's always recommended to allow your candle's wax to melt completely across the entire surface before extinguishing. If you do have to extinguish your candle before your wax has completely melted across the surface, a good long burn the next time you light it can repair your candle's wax.
Help! My flame is too high.
If your flame is too high, or you're getting soot in your jar, extinguish your candle and allow it to cool completely. When safe, trim your wick to 1/8" to 1/4." Use a wick trimmer to get your wick nice and short (nail clippers can work too, if that's all you have). Be sure to keep candle away from vents, fans, or other drafts that can interrupt its natural burn.
Help! My flame is too low.
Keep your wick trimmed in the 1/8" to 1/4" range. Check for and remove any debris or wick trimmings that can clog the wick and cause a low flame. Allow your candle to burn long enough to melt wax across entire surface from edge to edge of jar.
Help! My candle won't stay lit.
First, check the length of your wick. Trim wick to the 1/8" to 1/4" range. If the wick was trimmed too low, very carefully remove some of the melted wax with a paper towel, allow the candle to cool, and re-light. Also, remove any debris or previous wick trimmings that could clog the wick.
Help! I don't hear the crackle.
You may notice a soft or hard to hear crackle when you first light your candle, that's normal. Each burn will create a better crackle as long as you keep your wick trimmed properly. The very best crackle will come from the last half of the jar.

Discontinue use of your candle when there is around 1/2" of wax left in the bottom of the jar. At the bottom of the jar is a safety clip that keeps the flame at a safe height and prevents overheating. The jar can be placed on a wax warmer to enjoy the last bit of your candle, or you may scoop out the remaining wax and use directly in your wax melter. Jars can be cleaned with hot, soapy water and repurposed at home, or recycled.
